Protect your pets from theft

Prices have skyrocketed for many breeds following the pandemic. As a result, pet theft is a growing concern.

Keep your furry friend safe by...

  • Adding your name, address and phone number to their collar tags. If they get lost, this makes it easier to return them to you.
  • Keeping their microchip up to date. If you change address or phone number, update it. When getting a pet, you need to update the microchip to show that you are the owner.
  • Spaying or neutering your pet. Stolen pets are often sold to breeders, especially if they're pedigree, and desexing them disincentivizes this. Adding this information on their tags may make thieves think twice before stealing.

Always remember:

  • Don't leave your pet alone. Don't leave them outside stores, or in the car - even if you're only gone a few minutes.
  • Supervise your pet. If your pet is in the garden or other exterior space, keep an eye out. Lock any gates, and add alarms so that you can tell if they've been opened. Security cameras also help dissuade thieves. Remember, keeping your pet in a front garden makes them particularly vulnerable to theft.
  • Ensure your pet is trained to return when called. For dogs going on walks, keep them on a lead - especially when visiting new places. Always call cats home at the end of the day to keep them inside overnight.
